two poems
by Kit Willett
Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, oil on canvas, 1625
Awakening
I catch my echo in / the mirror
of Toi o Tāmaki. I’ve just / come
from seeing a / hung Saint Sebastian.
I look at the spouting / water and wonder
if it is, / after all this time, / time
to ask myself / the question.
Smoking
Once, I saw you smoking against that wall.
I never liked it when you smoked;
I could never breathe around you anyway.
